Adjustable Suspension

On models with the adjustable suspension, there are 3 settings selected via a switch on the console between the seats. The adjustable shocks/struts tend to last longer than the non-adjustable ones, although they are obscenely expensive to replace. New Nissan ones cost on the order of $800. That's $800 each. Most opt to replace them with non-adjustable after market struts. I'm not sure whether or not you can just pop non-adjustable struts in the front, KYB sells so…

Air Flow Meter

The air flow meter is of the mass sensing type. There is a thermistor in the air path which keeps tabs on the temperature of the intake air. To measure the actual mass, there is a small very fine wire strung in a square shape standing on a corner. A current is passed through this wire, heating it. The onrushing air cools the wire - the more air that passes over the wire the cooler the wire becomes. The resistance of the wire of course changes with temperature, the comput…

Brake Lights Stay On / Cruise Control Doesn't Work

Question: My brake lights won't turn off. Why?

Question: My cruise control stopped working. Why?

Answer: The rubber stopper that makes the switch lose contact broke.

You probably recently found something like this on the floor:

VG30E(T) Disassembly

Hopefully you'll never need to know this, but if you do, here it is:

Engine

	* Remove engine from car. Not a big deal, but if you don't think you'll be able to remember where it goes, label it. Keep everything separated and in order and you'll make you life much easier. Do not, of course, attempt to disconnect any A/C lines unless the system has been emptied.

Fuel Pressure Regulator

The fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is the small metal can in front of the intake manifold on the centerline of the engine with a vacuum hose coming out the top. This vacuum signal is controlled by a vacuum solenoid located beside the ignition coil on the driver's side fender. The vacuum is on at all times except for hot starts, when the vacuum signal is removed from the FPR, raising fuel pressure and making hot starts easier. The regulator is nothing more than sp…

Front Suspension Disassembly

300ZXs have standard macphereson struts in front. You don't need any special tools, just wrenches, sockets, and a floor jack.

To remove the strut assembly in front

	* Lift front of car up, remove wheels, remove brake calipers and unhook brake line from strut. Hang caliper with wire, do not hang caliper by its brake hose.

Overheating Problems

Before you take the drastic route and take your Z in to a shop, check some easy things first:

	* Is the radiator clear of debris?
Leaves, dead animals, sticks, or any general garbage you see on the road can make its way in front of your radiator, impeding air flow. If you have a lot of bugs in the fins of your radiator/condenser take a hose and rinse the fins from the rear.

Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor is on the side of the throttle body, it's a little black box with a 3 contact connector on it. One is ground(the middle one) and the outer two pins are full throttle and idle contacts. Only the idle contacts are used on sticks, automatics use idle and full throttle contacts. There are two screws on the switch so you can adjust it, they rarely go bad. With an ohmmeter, rotate the switch until the idle contact is closed with the throt…
