1984 50th Anniversary Edition 300ZX

In 1984 Nissan Motors produced 75,351 of its all new 300ZX for the United States market. Of these Z cars 5,148 limited-edition 300ZX Turbos were badged to honor Nissan's 50th Anniversary. An additional 300 vehicles were destined for the Canadian market. This Z came with no options except for a 4 speed automatic transmission. The cost of this Z ($26,000) was very pricy for the time.

Basic Information

All Z31s came with the R200 differential. Keep in mind that during crossover months (September) models may have either the listed ratio or the year prior. It doesn't matter if the car came with a manual or automatic transmission. All that matters is the model year and whether the engine was turbo or not.

All manual transmissions are the same length, so hence all manual driveshafts for two seat cars are also the same length.

Transmissions each have their own unique slip-yoke on the driveshaft, and length for their application:

The FS5R90A is Nissan's version of the Borg Warner T5. It shares lots of parts with the Ford Non-World Class T5.

Used in 84-86 Z31 Turbos.

It has been generally regarded that the FS5R90A transmission is not very strong in stock form. People seem to blow these up with as little as 300 horsepower. The good side is they are cheap to rebuild. Rebuild kits are as cheap as $125 on ebay. Any short throw shifter made for the 5-speed Mustang will work fine in this transm…

So you want to buy a 300ZX. There a are some things that you should know to look out for, just like with any other car. Of course, check all the things that apply to all cars, look for rust, accident damage, bad body work if it has been wrecked, basic maintenance, etc. Maintenance records are good, but a car that doesn't have any records isn't necessarily one to avoid. If there are maintenance records/receipts/whatever, look at them and try to find t…
