Water leaks

There are a few spots where 300ZXs have a habit of leaking water inside.

  1. Where the t-tops, door window, and body all meet.
  2. Rear 1/4 windows
  3. Taillight area
The ttop leaks are easily noticable by wet seats, water dripping in your lap, etc. How to fix your leaky t-tops! Keep the weather stripping in good condition, clean regularly with armor all or something similar. I've heard that some good silicon protectant can help the rubber regain some of it's pliability and swell it slightly to fix the leak if it's not too bad already. If you know of a good solution, please let me know.

The 1/4 window leaks are not as bad, they are caused by the sealant between the windows and body sagging out and letting water in. The only way to fix this is to remove the windows and put new sealer on. You have to remove the big peice of interior trim to get to the two small screws that hold the trim on. One in the back at the apex, one in the front mid way top to bottom. After the trim is removed the window is only held in by the sealant.

The taillight leaks are possibly the worst because you won't notice them unless you're looking. If this leak goes unnoticed you may end up with a big rust hole at the bottom of the spare tire well. To fix:
remove both rear taillights and remove the black plastic trim pieces around the lenses by unscrewing from the inside of the light assemblies. Throughly clean the entire housings with a hose or in a bathtub. With some generic silicon sealant and a pointy tip on the tube, squeeze sealant into the crack on the top of the assemblies, between the lenses and the body of the lights as far around as you can, this is where they most often leak. Get a new roll of that black sealant stuff from somewhere and use it to reseal the taillights to the body, don't use the old stuff as it sags and leaks also after a while. The leaky lights only applies to 84-86 models, 87-89 have different taillights which do not seem prone to leaking, although they may leak around the seal with the body. Don't forget to throughly clean the body where the black sticky stuff goes. Paint thinner works quite well. Also check the sockets for the taillights, if your lights are leaking the water inside the lights will corrode the sockets. If corroded clean them throughly with a wire brush, the corrosion will stop once the leak is fixed.
