z31.com FAQ

I've included this old FAQ for people to understand where Z31.com came from. Originally it was run on a university server at the University of Alabama Birmingham while Morgan was a student there. Since then it has been on a number of desktop computers, colocated servers, and now a shared website host server.

Originally everything was written in languages such as PERL. It took almost nothing to run as everything was text based. Other than the now defunct forum software, it basically still takes almost nothing to run. Today a lot of the PERL has been replaced by HTML and will likely continue that way. The website is now hosted on a shared server that I use for work. Z31.com running on it still literally isn't even a blip on the resources.

Over the last 25 years of being part of this website and the Z31 community at large, I've seen the needs and wants of Z31 owners change a LOT. We used to be on the cutting edge of Z31 information. In the last 10 years or so I've allowed the information to not progress with the community. Today, my goal is to maintain the wealth of information here so that new owners, people with stockish cars, and people interested in the history of this generation have a place to get reliable and accurate information. Over time I do have intentions of improving and updating this information to help people better use it.

I've got a pretty fast Z31 so performance is certainly my favorite aspect of ownership. I'd like to update that information to reflect what the community has learned in recent years and help people know what can be done with their cars. It's probably time to update my car a bit too.

Thank you, Everyone.

This information was from the first FAQ probably in the late 1990's.

Morgan and John are no longer involved in the website but John still owns the domain.

Now, the really old FAQ

  1. When did z31.com start?

    1993 AD.

  2. Who does z31.com?

Me, myself, I, and John Clark.

  3. Wow! What neat software! Where can I get a distribution of the modified message board, registry, classifieds, fiche viewer, links database, etc, etc. for my web site?

You can email me and ask for them.

  4. But where'd you get them?

I wrote them all except for the message board, which is a highly modified version of "wwwboard" from matt's script archive.

  5. What does z31.com run on?

A pentium 200, 64 meg of memory, and a few gig of drive space. Of course it runs unix, windoze couldn't even run on such a dog of a machine and still do anything usefull. You can see some performance type thingies here

  6. What software do you use?

I use the best html editor in the world, a combination of vi and perl scripts! For image work I use gimp and for the rare word processing/spreadsheet work I use StarOffice for linux.
