The Romulator is a device that impersonates a prom chip and allows you to make changes to the simulated prom chip on a Windows computer without having to burn and install a chip after every change. They are available for under $200 from Transtronics.
A Romulator can be installed in any 28 pin ECU(ie. 88-89). You can't install it in 84-87 ECUs because they have 26 pin chips.
Start with your 88-89 ecu:
Take the cover off:
The prom is circled:
Desolder it(this is the hard part) and install a 28 pin socket:
Obtain a romulator:
Install it:
Bend some resistors to make room for the cable:
Bend the edge of the case to let the cable pass through. Make sure
the case doesn't chafe through the cable insulation:
Load a rom into the romulator software:
Since that stuff is all greek, use one of the software packages that gives
a legible display of the data and edit. Save data and update the romulator
to test results:
