The 300ZX was the continuation of the Datsun Z-cars started in 1970 with the 240z. In 1984, Datsun officially changed their name to Nissan because Datsun had produced Japanese fighter planes in WWII, and they thought it was hurting their image in the ever expanding American Market. The original idea behind the 240Z was a cheap, reliable, fun sporty car, which it was(is). As more and more options and gimmicks were offered they got heavier, more expensive, and weren't as fun. Most sports cars go this route: RX7s, Supras, Zs, and MR2s. All those cars are now out of production except for the Supra because of low profits, which is due in turn to low sales of $50k Japanese sports cars. Everyone knows that only Italians and Germans can charge that much for cars. The 300ZX was started in 1984, and continued with only minor body changes through 1989, when it was replaced by the last Z as a 1990 model, also called the 300ZX.
