I know I am probably going to get ripped a new one for this because I know its come up before but I could not find it anywhere. I remember reading on here at some point that someone made a bell housing for the 350z 6 speed that would than make it fit into a z31. Is there any truth to this?

Anyone happen to know what the 6th gear ratio is? Yes, I know, go look it up myself... probably will.

Depends on what you want the extra gear for.

Would 4th be a typical 1:1 with 5th .7-ish :1 and then 6th even more of an over-drive?

Or is 6th the overdrive gear and they have packed the other first 5 ratios closer together?

I'm (obviously) not familiar with the 6-speed setup.

your 5th is going to be 1:1 and your 6th is going to be your OD.

Yeppers... (sigh) I suspected as much. So anyone who might have been hoping for, or expecting better fuel economy by having the 6th gear on the long flat stretches can pretty much write that one off. (If that's what anyone was thinking.)

Gear ratios:

1st 3.794
2nd 2.324
3rd 1.624
4th 1.271
5th 1.000
6th 0.794
Reverse 3.446

Above pulled from here: http://www.nissan.co.za/vehicles_zcar_specs.asp?n=8
First site I found... assumed to be the same across the board.

Hmm....

http://z31.com/wiki/doku.php?id=information:transmission

So no matter which z31 transmission you have, you'll actually have a worse final gear. Oh, and you'll have all the benefits of shifting more often as well. And of course the transmission is heavier. WOW! Find a way to make your car slower and get worse mileage all at the same time!

Here's the scoop kids. The stock Z31 transmission has great gear ratios for the engine's power band. Unless you do something stupid and narrow the power band to a few hundred RPMs, just keep the stock gear ratios. There is no need for a 6th gear.

Oh there is no argument there, and this isn't a serious or even realistic project that's on my to-do list.

I'm very satisfied with the performance of my '71C, and Frankly, I'd rather remove the thalamus gland from a gerbil than pull the tranny again without a really good reason to do so.
