"
EDIT: Ignition timing is right at 10 degrees, as per underhood sticker"
Was the timing at 10BTDC, and if not, where was it before you adjusted it? _________________ Proud longtime owner of a 1984 slicktop, in excellent condition and driven daily! is that the original hood? you said you had an 86 built 1987 model, but the sticker denotes it is an 88 model year... _________________ Learning as i go...

That's the funny part, the car IS original as far as I know. The VIN matched up with the car when I had the title transferred to me.
Slicktop...I didn't touch the ignition timing, I marked 10 degrees BTDC on the crank pulley, car warmed up to operating temp completely and I checked the timing with my timing light, and it was spot on. I also checked the timing on cold start up, and it is at 15 degrees BTDC, then once idle sets at 700-750 rpms, its right at 10 degrees.
Should I set it at 15 degrees? As of now, I have done just routine maintenance on her...NGK plugs/wires(plugs gapped at .043), cap/rotor, oil changes at 2800mi with 10w-40 non synthetic oil, A/C removal w/lines, Prothane Poly bushing kit, recent trans and diff flush and fill, 9" cone intake..removed resonator, all silicone vacuum lines replacing stock rubbing lines.
I also have an intake manifold gasket kit that I'm going to do at some point when I have time to. I assume they are the original gaskets on the car. |

i dunno, but thats what i was thinking.... that hood seems to be from an 88... i couldnt find the timing info in an 88 fsm though so i cant confirm it. _________________ Learning as i go...

As per FSM, timing for 1987 cars is 15 degrees...which is what mine is currently at. 10 was for 1988 models for some reason, which I guess means my hood IS a replacement and from an '88 car. I set timing at 15 because the 1987 FSM states that I should.
I wonder what timing I should run if I plug up the POV with an NPT fitting.
Also, I'm going to regap my plugs down to .038 |

Ugh, new gremlins....Drove to work today(1 hr commute highway) no issues at all.
Got out of work at 9pm tonight, drove and it felt like it was misfiring, sounded like a lawn tractor, sort of lack of power, but not really, more just the noise of it.
Running 15 degrees of timing on a stock motor. I don't know if its a spark plug...they're gapped at .043 but they're brand new...wires are new, cap/rotor are new, fuel filter is new, and I put the POV back in last night. I'm completely stumped right now as to what else to check. The tach bounce came back again, between 2000-3000 rpms mostly. I didn't rev over 3500.
Constant cruising at 65mph and it seemed fine, no tach bounce, only when under throttle/beginning of boost. |

sounds like an ignition problem. check distributor shaft for side to side play, also blow out the optical sensor in the dist with compressed air .dirt in there can affect the signal. _________________ 87 ttop 6th z31 so far |

Best plugs for these engines are regular NGKs and OEM or NGK wires. A lot of after market wires leak and arc juice.
Try parking your car in a dark place at night, open the hood, and run the engine up and down while looking for arcing, any arcing and that is your problem............. _________________ Proud longtime owner of a 1984 slicktop, in excellent condition and driven daily!
